Title

Impacts of trawling on benthic habitats in the subantarctic and high antarctic

Project aims

This study will evaluate the potential effects of trawling on benthic habitats of the continental shelf of Eastern Antarctica and on the Kerguelen Plateau near to Heard Island and McDonald Islands in the Indian Ocean. It will include assessments of (i) the relationship between the abundances of benthic invertebrates and the geomorphology and oceanography of the region, (ii) spatial distributions and potential uniqueness of different habitat types, (iii) conservation status of those habitats, and (iv) the vulnerability of these habitats to disruption by commercial trawling activities.
